Joey & the Wheels were formed seven years ago in the summer of 2003 by Joey Shields, (Lead Vocals, Slide/Lead Guitars, + Harmonicas) and were intended to be a three piece Rhythm & Blues Revue. “The Wheels”, or Joey’s Rhythm Section, are basically Drummer/Vocalist and Bass Guitarist/Vocalist,occasionally a separate harmonica’rist
An opportunity arose in February 2004 for the Band to be added to a seven city tour of Belgium, with six other Merseyside bands. Joey & the Wheels played second to the top act on the tour and were excitedly accepted by Belgian R&B enthusiasts, playing venues like the Ghent “Vorout” Theatre, the Brugge “Cactus”, and the Kortrike “Banana Peel”. After-gig ‘jams’ in Belgium and England include playing with “Junior Walker’s Allstars”, “Roland” (Belgium), “Lefty Diz” , Joey recently completed 18 successful engagements in Califonia U.S.A, taking in “San Francisco & Sonoma” (Valley of the Moon) etc., etc.
Joey has taken his Wheels on 15 tours in Europe up to the present, and resided in Brugge (West Flanders) for 6 months, gigging and recording. They have also been playing concerts and festivals in the Northwest of England with bands like The Producers,Steve Gibbons, the Hamsters, Big Town Playboys, Louisianna Red, Big Joe Louie and the BluesKings, and Louisianna Blues-man John Campbell,etc etc. Joey and the Wheels have appeared on National Television in Belgium with Russian performers to promote the Glasnost cause, playing covers like Taj Mahal’s “She caught the K.T.”, Freddie King’s “Pack it up”, John Mooney’s “Country Boy”, Albert King’s “Born under a Bad Sign”, Neville Bros’ “ride u’r pony” and Savoy Brown’s “Train to Nowhere”, Otis Rush’s “messin with the kid” plus many more American and British R&B Standards.
Joey’s influences are vast,his favourite Bluesmen include… Robert Johnson..Taj Mahal..Sleepy John Estes..Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller)…Josh White..Big Bill Bronzy…Howlin Wolf..Van Morrison.. Terry Reid…etc etc..
